Music Therapy in Early Childhood Special Education

Music therapy in early childhood special education supports early learning and enhances early childhood development by using music therapy interventions target communication, social-emotional development, motor skills, cognitive growth, and sensory regulation. Music therapists provide individual music therapy services in the early childhood special education setting through a student’s individual education plan (IEP). Students qualify for music therapy when determined a necessary related service through the re-evaluation assessment process. Through singing, movement, instrument play, and interventions designed specifically to target IEP goals, students are engaged in developmentally appropriate learning that encourages participation and skill-building in a motivating environment. We partner with school districts in the St. Louis and surrounding areas.

Early Childhood Group Music & Music Therapy Experiences

Music therapy groups in the early childhood setting provide engaging and interactive experiences that support children’s overall growth and development through music-based play and learning. In a group setting, children participate in singing, movement, instrument exploration, turn-taking activities, and social interaction, all within a structured and supportive environment. These experiences help build communication, language, motor, cognitive, and social-emotional skills while encouraging creativity, self-expression, and confidence. Music therapy groups also promote peer connection, attention, routine-following, and sensory regulation, making learning enjoyable and accessible for young children of varying developmental abilities and needs. We provide weekly groups in central St. Louis through our "Wee Rock"abilities program We also provide music therapy groups in pre-school programs, and for organizations such as the Gateway Down Syndrome Association and the June Jesse Memorial Foundation.
