Through this song children learn to ask for a turn using a phrase, make eye contact with their peer, respond to a question, and wait as their peer takes their turn. The lyrics and activity was created by Maria Carron, but you will recognize the familiar melody to the song Yankee Doodle.

To set this activity up, have two children sit facing each other. Give a highly desired toy or instrument to only one child. When the music stops the other child can ask his peer for a turn. The song will naturally prompt the child to use the phrase, “May I have a turn please.” The child with the instrument can then respond “Yes” to the question.

Let’s all play our instruments. We are taking turns.
Let’s all play our instruments. Now stop.
Look at your partner and ask,

Child #1 “May I have a turn please?”
Child #2 “yes”
